Tonight as we celebrate Canada Day, I wanted to share a personal decision I’ve made and the reasons behind it. While many enjoy the vibrant fireworks displays that light up the sky, I choose not to attend these events. This decision is rooted in my commitment as a trauma-informed coach and my deep compassion for those affected by the loud explosions and bright flashes.

Fireworks can have a significant negative impact on pets and wildlife. The sudden, loud noises cause immense stress and anxiety in animals, leading them to panic and potentially run away from their homes. Pets, especially dogs and cats, often experience fear and disorientation during fireworks, and the aftermath can be distressing for both the animals and their owners. Statistics show that wildlife and domesticated animal are negatively impacted by fireworks.

For people suffering from PTSD, the impact of fireworks can be profound and distressing. The loud noises and sudden flashes of light can trigger traumatic memories and responses, causing intense fear, anxiety, and emotional distress. For veterans, survivors of violence, and others who live with PTSD, fireworks can be more than just a celebration—they can be a painful reminder of past traumas.

By choosing not to attend fireworks, I aim to honour and support those who are negatively affected by these displays. Instead, I choose to celebrate Canada Day in ways that promote peace, well-being, and connection. This might include spending time in nature, gathering with loved ones, or reflecting on the values that make our community and country strong.

I encourage everyone to consider the impact of fireworks on our animal companions and fellow human beings. There are many ways to celebrate this beautiful country that are inclusive and considerate of all. Let’s embrace compassion and mindfulness in our celebrations, ensuring that Canada Day is a joyous occasion for everyone.

Wishing you all a peaceful and happy Canada Day.
