As I write this, I am having a “terribly horribly no good  very bad day”, Thanks Judith Viorst for that pithy title that captures days like today.  It is a day of emails gone missing, printer not working, mixed up communication and a feeling of vast imperfection. Very frustrating. Yet I know in the midst of feeling frazzled there is a bigger picture. I know there is a calm, lovable person inside these many feelings of frustration. But how do I find her? How do you find that lighter side of your self when storms are brewing in your life.  There are many ways to create movement when feeling stuck. The key is to cultivate the knowing that this is possible. You can turn things around, calm the nerves, soothe the stress and shift to a more positive sense of well being. However, the myth is that you can change on a dime. Sometimes changing mindset can be minutes, hours, days or longer.  And sometimes change can happen quickly.

I believe, At our core, we are made of gold, with a pure shining essence reflecting love, playfulness and a sense of well being. This is our true nature. Our spirit, our essence is bigger than we know. However, life throws us challenges and can throw mud on this essential self. Cultivating mindset is about moving through triggering events to find our way back to a calm, grounded self.

Some thoughts about cultivating mindset:

  • Our internal environment is up to us to regulate. Regardless of what is happening outside of us, we can manage our inner state.
  • Changing perspective is not always easy, but very well worth it. Whether it is seeing someone else’s side of the story, or getting a bigger picture, personal impressions can change.
  • Being in the present moment. It is easy to steep ourselves in the past or worry about things that have not happened yet. Can you bring yourself back to the present?
  • Accepting yourself regardless of what is happening externally.
  • Accepting that everyone experiences periods of loss, change and heightened stress.  If we are having a tough time, it does not mean that you have done something wrong.

I think the key to shifting our energies, self regulating, is believing that it is possible. There have been many periods in my life that I faced intense, chronic pain that affected my mobility and ability to do daily tasks. I remember that when I woke up I took comfort in a passage from the bible: “this is the day that the Lord hath made. We will rejoice and be glad in it” Psalm 118: 24). This small verse reminded me that even though I was in pain that something surprising and exciting was still possible because it was a brand new day. Resilience is about digging deep, believing in yourself and gathering a  basket of tools that you can use when things feel tough.

Following my melt down, I did some Emotional Freedom Technique aka tapping, and took a walk. In a few hours I felt much calmer. That evening I met with a group for a prescheduled meeting. By the next day, after my morning meditation, I felt clear and cleared from the mini storm. It doesn’t matter how fast you can shift back to calm presence, only that you can see where you are heading.

Some of the tools in my basket that I use and teach clients are: EFT, or tapping, meditation, journaling, balancing my chakras, calling on divine help, walking in nature, and being near large bodies of water in conjunction with hands on bodywork.

Do you have a sense of this essence of your self that you love? What makes you sparkle? What do others enjoy about you? Do you have people in your life who can reflect this self back to you? I would encourage you to find ways to connect with your beauty.

In what ways are you already strengthening your mindset? I am sure that you are more resilient than you give yourself credit for.

Please share any thoughts or reflections. Email or text to book a discovery call to learn more about how I help clients build resiliency.
