Nature reminds us of the web of interconnectedness, a fact that is not given enough attention. Nature is healing. I have been blessed to be reminded of this truth through receiving healing sessions, from the work I offer and from many life situations. We are linked to each other, to the earth and to an all knowing Universal Energy. I know this truth in a deep visceral way.

For me the most tangible place to remember this truth is in nature. This picture of me was taken at Rattlesnake point. As you walk into the park, there are a group of rocks which call to me. As we started out this day, I saw my rock. I felt the delight of a child and scrambled onto the rock. My friend captured this picture,  which I treasure to this day.   The cares of the world have dropped away; the joy  bubbling up is so evident. Every time I see this picture, it reminds me that these moments are accessible and available for all.

Nature is not there to serve us but rather to remind us that we are all interwoven and interconnected with all the elements of our beautiful earth. The friend with whom I often walked, had this special relationship to Turkey vultures as it reminded her of her dog that she left behind in England. Sure enough, whenever we were out in nature, the turkey vultures would just flock to us. I believe on this day there were 12 or 14 turkey vultures in the two or three trees standing in front of us. I have never seen that many turkey vultures.

These are some nuggets garnered from  my time spent in nature: forests, mountains, beaches and lakes.

1. Nature allows us to quiet our minds and feel with our bodies the tremendous healing that mother Earth wants for us.

2. Through this interconnectedness between nature and ourselves, we can get messages from the rocks, the trees, the birds, the animals, and other miscellaneous things that can happen when we are out in nature. I remember walking a labyrinth once and as soon as we finished a tremendous wind started. The message was that some tremendous clearing had just happened initiated by our ritual walking of the labyrinth.  Notice if animal activity is unusual.  For example, three crows sitting on your driveway or sightings of cardinals over a short period of time.  Ted Williams, Animal Speak is a good resource.

3. We can look to nature to remember how simple life can be. As human beings we can make it so complex. Trees know their rhythms: when to shed leaves, when to start the burst of growth in the spring and,  how to prepare for the long winter. There is a simplicity in nature; an inner knowing that guides all living beings and reminds us to not overcomplicate life. Can we open ourselves to that deep inner knowing?

4. Nature is filled with metaphors and lessons. When a seed is planted, it knows which way to put its roots down and which way to look for light. It knows its roots need to be established first. The trees have an inter- communication system as it lives symbiotically with the fungus that is an Internet stronger than any Internet that humans have made.  What does nature have to teach you today?

As a Massage Therapist practicing CranioSacral therapy, I hold these truths of nature to guide me. I work with the rhythms and cyclical patterns of the body. From my experience as a therapist I am reminded of the inherent intelligence of our bodies.
